  • 7th Interact District Assembly: "Assembly With A Mission"

This event was held on the 6th of July 1997 at the R.I.T Alles Hall of D.S. Senanayake College. 

 

 

  • Rotary Youth Activities Month

The month of October was named as the Rotary Youth Activities Month. For this month the Interact District Committee made the following 3 projects compulsory.

A Community Service Project.

A School beneficiary Project.

A lecture or workshop for new Interactors.

These projects were under the two avenues of service, Community & Club Service. 

 

  • Interaction`97

This event was held on the 18th & 19th of October `97 at the Police Park Grounds for the 5th successful year. The 5 sporting & 5 recreational events that were organized are as follows

Soccer (Girls/Boys)

Debate (Girls/Boys)

Basket Ball (Girls/Boys)

Drama (Girls/Boys)

Volley Ball (Girls/Boys)

Quiz (Girls/Boys)

Give Us A Clue (Girls/Boys)

 

Approximately 60 schools from most parts of the island, with a participation of over 3500 Interactors, teachers, parents & other invitees were involved in both days. The opening ceremony was held on the 1st day with Rtn. Haroon Bin Ahmed as the Chief Guest and Interact District Chairman Rtn. Keith Raymond as the Guest of Honour.

The semi-finals of all sporting activities & finals of the Quiz and Give Us A Clue were held on the 18th. The Interact Club of Muslim Ladies College hosted Interaction song competition on the same day at their school premises, while the Interact Club of Visakha Vidyalaya & St. Bridgt`s Convent co-hosted the Interaction Debates at Visakha Vidyalaya. The finals of the sporting activities & the Interaction debates were held on the 19th Sunday at Police Park Grounds.

Tug-of-War & Tap Rugger 7`s were held for non Interactors. These events were worked off on both Saturday & Sunday.

The closing ceremony of Interaction was held on Sunday afternoon, with Rtn. Rohan Hapugalle as the Chief Guest & District Interact Co-Chaiman Rtn. Ajit Jayamanne as the Guest of Honour.

The Interact club of D.S.Senanayake College ran the request stall during both days of this event. The open-air discotheque entertained the crowd in the evening. A total profit of Rs.111,837.00 was made from this event. Interaction `97 was co-sponsored by Lankem & Pure Beverages Co. Ltd and was promoted by YA TV & TV Times. Interactors from Galle & Badulla were accommodated at Isipathana College. 

  • Polio Plus Campaign

This year too all the Interact Clubs in the District helped their respective Rotary Clubs to successfully conduct the Polio Plus campaign

 

  • Deepavali : "Light In Life"

For the 1st time in the history of Interact District 3220 organized  an event to mark the Hindu culture. This project was organized by the Interact club of Hindu College. It was held on the 20th of November `97 at the Saraswathi Hall of Hindu College.

The programme contained speeches, dramas, traditional music, visual presentations & entertainment items. The Chief Guest was Rtn. Keith Raymond & the Guests of Honour were Rtn. Ketheeshwaran the president of the Rotary Club of Colombo Mid Town & Mr. T. Muthukumaraswami, principal of Hindu College. 

  • Christmas

This project was planned in order to give Interactors a feeling of Christmas & to help the community. It was carried out in 2 phases. Phase 1 was to raise funds by way of involving all Interactors and phase 2 was to spread the meaning of Christmas to the community. 

  • First Phase: Printing Of Christmas Cards

An art competition was carried out at the 'Sri Lanka Dhara Lama Niwasaya' in Wellawatte on the theme `Children who belong to different ethnic groups unite`. The best drawings were selected for printing on the cards.

A total number of 9000 cards were printed & were sold at Rs.10.00 per card. A sales point was put up at Majestic City from 1st - 22nd of November.

All Interact Clubs were given a certain number of cards to be sold in order to help with this project. A total profit of Rs.22,360.00 was made out of this project. 

  • Second Phase: 'Christmas with all'

A Christmas Carol Competition was held on the 5th of December. This was hosted by the Interact Club of Royal College & was held at their College Hall. In addition there were 2 speeches by Brother Alexander & Mrs. Marleen Dissanayake. 5 Interact Clubs took part in this competition.

A prize distribution for the orphans who took part in the Christmas & New Year card project was also held at this event. The Chief Guest Rtn. Janaka Edirisinghe distributed the prizes & certificates to the orphans. 

  • Youth Camp `97

This project was held for the 3rd successful year. Interactors from most parts of the country got together at the Sri Sumangala Maha Vidyalaya, Hikkaduwa from the 26th-29th of December 1997. 70 Interactors were selected for this 4 day event. The opening ceremony was held upon the arrival at the camp site on the 26th with Rtn. Dayananda De Silva of the Rotary Club of Galle as the Chief Guest. Several other Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Galle were also present for this ceremony.

Campers took part in the jungle hike, summer team games, rope & rock climbing, camp fire and many other exciting activities.

All campers were awarded a certificate of participation, while 15 campers were awarded "Youth Camp `97 Certificate of Excellence", for their outstanding performances during the camp. 

  • Rotary International President`s Visit

The Rotary International President Rtn. Glen Kinross visited Sri Lanka during the month of January. A conference was held on the 1st of January at the B.M.I.C.H to mark this event. 

 

  • Interact Leadership Training Programme

This event was held for the 3rd successful year. The opening ceremony was held at the Hotel Galadari with Rotary District Governor elect Rtn. Rohan Hapugalle as the Chief Guest.

A batch of 42 Interactors were selected on an interview for this programme. The main objective of the ILT programme was to make sure that the future leaders of Interact would know the fundamentals of this movement.

The whole programme consisted of  7 lectures, after which an examination was given to assess the knowledge. Only 28 candidates to completed this programme. 

  • International RYLA 1998

From the 24th-31st of May 1998 at Ooty, India 11 Interactors represented District 3220. They are ;

  6. Int. Hejaaz Hizbullah.

  10. Int. Piyumi.

  11. Int. Shewani.

 

6000 Interactors from all over the world took part in this event. The Interactors had a successful workshop. Interactors from Sri Lanka brought honour to the country by actively participating in International RYLA & Int. Hejaaz Hisbullah by being invited to give an impression about RYLA at the closing ceremony. 

  • Scholarship Fund

A scholarship fund was introduced as a District Community Service Project to schools on their performance during the first two quarters of the Interact year 97 /98. Namely :

Ananda College.

Good Shepherd Convent, Kandy.

Mahinda College, Galle.

Muslim Ladies College.

St. Bridget`s Convent.

St. Thomas`s College, Matale.

St. Thomas`s College.

Visakha Vidyalaya.

Wesley College.

Wycherley International School.

A certain sum of money was awarded to each school, to be given to a selected needy child from their or from the community.

  • RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) 

  • Youth Summit `98

The 1st ever International Understanding project was organized by the Interact Club of Ananda College. The 1st phase of the project was held on the 23rd May 1998 at Ananda College. Mr. Arun Dias Bandaranayake & Gen.Upali Karunaratna were the guest speakers.

The 2nd phase of "Youth Summit `98" was held on the 30th of May. Past District Project Chairman Int.Chinthaka de Soysa led the discussion on "Terrorism". 

  • Donation to the 'Sri Lankadara Balika Home'

As a Community Service project the District Committee donated Rs.25,000.00 worth of furniture to the above mentioned home. 

  • Swimming Gala `98

The annual swimming gala was organized by the Interact clubs of St. Bridget`s Convent & Royal College on the 11th of July at the Royal College Swimming Pool. 

 

  • Inter-Interact Cricket Sixes

The Interact Club of D. S. Senanayake College & Nalanda College organized this project.  

 

  • 7th Interact District Conference : "The Conference Of Unity"

This event was held on the 30th & 31st of January `98 at the National Youth Service Centre, Maharagama. It was co-hosted by the Interact Clubs of St. Bridget`s Convent & St. Peter`s College.

A total participation of over 1000 Interactors from all parts of the island were present for the occasion. The opening ceremony was held on the 1st day of the conference while 2nd day began with a Key note address by Mr. Arun Dias Bandaranayake & was followed by a panel discussion.
