Community Service is the heart and soul of the Interact Movement. The Interact District Council 3220 for Sri Lanka and Maldives has taken another step towards making the world a better place by carrying out Project 'Intercede', consecutively for the second time this year. This project mainly focuses on sustainable community development by facilitating the basic education of the future generation. Currently there are 10,012 government schools with a student population of 4.2 million, yet only several schools are fully facilitated and are able to provide a suitable learning environment for their students. It is true that the literacy rate of our country is very high and that most schools provide the basic education, but the opportunities for young children to expand their knowledge and explore beyond the boundaries of a textbook are limited, especially in comparatively rural areas. Following is the data found by the Department of Census of Statistics. Districts are ranked from poorest to least poor. In the district with the lowest levels of multidimensional poverty, Colombo, school attendance has the largest contribution to the Multi-Dimensional Poverty (MPI). The table shows the percentage contributions of each of the weighted indicators to the MPI for each district. Therefore, our main objective is to facilitate approximately 4 schools, from Colombo, Puttalam, Kurunegala varying from primary to senior and secondary levels, by satisfying their key requirements. The ways we aid these schools may vary depending on the requirements of each school individually. Project Intercede also goes along these guidelines as we focus on restoring and furnishing schools in need. Intercede further fulfills many of the Key Rotary Areas of Focus. Primarily it features the area Basic Education and Literacy, and contributes towards Water and Sanitation, while establishing Economic and Community Development in the long term. This project will be the main Community Service initiative of the Interact District for this year and years to come as we strive to achieve 'service above self'.
